A nurse has been struck off the register for misconduct over a series of charges, including handing the wrong instruments to surgeons and injuring a patient by administering incorrect medicines.

A panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) Conduct and Competence Committee found that Mary Trainor, who at the time was employed as a Grade D staff nurse by Craigavon Area Hospital, demonstrated a lack of competence and her fitness to practise was impaired.

The panel heard that between February 2004 and January 2005, Ms Trainor gave inappropriate advice to a colleague, caused injury to a patient by giving an incorrect treatment, demonstrated unfamiliarity with surgical procedures and equipment and incorrectly entered information about a patient.

The panel concluded that Ms Trainor demonstrated a lack of knowledge, skill and judgement that rendered her unfit to practice safely and effectively.

Commenting on the panel's decision, Craig Turton, spokesman for the NMC said:

"Mary Trainor's actions represent a serious departure from standards as set out in the NMC code of professional conduct and led to a patient injury. These charges show the registrant poses a continuing risk to patients and clients. Mary Trainor was struck off the register to protect the public."
